The Lion King… $4.3 Million, Highest-Grossing Week in Broadway History

The average paid admission was $284.89 and the show played to 99.23 percent capacity at the Minskoff Theatre. This is according to numbers released by the Broadway League, which reports the Broadway grosses every week. The holidays are often a boom time at the box office, as tourists and locals celebrate the season by taking family trips to Broadway. The final week of 2022 (the numbers cover the period of December 26-January 1) seems to have been especially prosperous, with 21 shows each grossing over $1 million. The Broadway production of Disney's The Lion King has released various free virtual theater courses with an aim of teaching children and their families all aspects of how the long-running show runs. The musical is currently on hiatus due to COVID-19. Originally designed for schools that were putting on its own Lion King productions, The Lion King Experience is now available for all to use while schools remain closed. The scene is a staple of Broadway: After a show ends, its most ardent fans gather at the stage door, hoping for an autograph, an Instagrammable photo, or even a conversation with their favorite star. But this week, facing a widening coronavirus outbreak that threatens public health in New York and around the world, the theater industry’s leaders said they wanted to put a stop to the practice. “We are highly recommending that all stage door activities be eliminated for the time being,” the Broadway League, a trade organization representing producers and theater owners, said on Tuesday.
